MANAGEMENT MEETINGS:
FROM STATUS UPDATES TO STRATEGIC DISCUSSIONS
Context
Most management meetings are less effective than they can and should be in order to fully support the realization of the company’s long-term vision and short-term business and operational KPIs. Many startups that experience hyper growth may still not even have a formulated Executive Leadership Team (ELT), making key decisions “on the go” or in “kitchenette” forums that include the founders and their trusted peers (even though these peers are often not properly qualified to support effective decision-making processes). More mature organizations are frequently not much further along – having formal management meetings but mis utilizing them as status update forums that don’t include real problem solving or strategic decision making.
Mission
Establish an Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to serve as the company's formal senior most decision-making forum. The effort of ensuring this team’s top performance will be focused on weekly management meetings with additional support given through individual coaching with the company’s President, CEO and Head of People and Culture as well as with some the individual ELT members. The methodology behind this program focuses on four key variables: (a) Northern Star; (b) Professional (silo) vs. Managerial (cross); (c) Managerial independence and (d) Strategic Focus . ✓Quality of agenda items (strategic discussions, NOT status updates).
✓ Quality of discussions during the meetings: engagement, attentiveness, time management.
✓ Timeliness and accuracy of follow-up on decisions and action items decided upon in meetings.
✓ General ELT member’s satisfaction of this forum with regards to the decisions that come out of it and their ability to impact them.
